MN Sustainability

DPS’s fleet is one of the three largest statewide. However, most vehicles are for law enforcement and investigation operations and are exempt by statute from the sustainability efforts. Fossil fuel use was down 9% from 2017 to 2022 and miles per gallon in the light fleet has increased by nearly 30%. We account for approximately 8% of state government’s fleet fossil fuel use.

The DPS fleet is a combination of owned and leased vehicles. We look for opportunities throughout the fleet to contribute to the agency and statewide goals. In 2021, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension added 12 hybrid vehicles to their fleet, or approximately 8% of vehicles. In 2022, the Minnesota State Patrol focused on several high intensity traffic safety programs which are making Minnesota roadways safer for fuel efficient and electric vehicles across the state.

MN Department of Public Safety

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) supports sustainability efforts outlined in Executive Order 19-27 and will establish goals and develop strategic plans to contribute to the statewide sustainability goals.
