Water

In 2022, water consumption increased from prior years and the baseline. Long-term reductions from the Department of Human Services and Department of Corrections reduced water consumption for the enterprise, but there is yearly variation in water use because of changes in irrigation practices during the summer months depending on the weather.

Goal

Reduce water consumption 15% by 2025 compared to a 2017 adjusted baseline.

Accomplishments

The Department of Administration assessed the buildings on the Capitol Complex and installed low-flow fixtures wherever possible.

The Department of Military Affairs proactively conducts subsurface pipe inspections at the Camp Ripley Training Center to identify leaks that would not be visible without this type of thorough inspection.

Barriers

Over half of state government’s water use is in processes like treating wastewater at the Metropolitan Council and hatching fish at the Department of Natural Resources. These processes require large investments to lower water use.

Most agencies don’t have separate meters measuring irrigation use. With more funds, agencies could install these meters to better monitor watering during the summer and irrigation trends.
